Hot Water Floor Mount – Cast Iron Atmospheric Draft
Probably the most familiar option, cast iron boilers have been a reliable, time-tested design for over 100 years. The heat exchanger is constructed of durable, long-lasting cast iron sections and push nipples. It’s not unusual for a cast iron hot water boiler to last 25 – 30 years. While heavy and cumbersome to install, their relative simplicity makes them easy to troubleshoot should a service situation arise. Cast iron boilers are best suited to high-temperature, low-mass and high-temperature, high-mass heating system designs. Due to the use of cast iron, return water temperatures need to be at least 140 Degrees F or else the risk of “boiler shock” and corrosion can occur. This is not a problem with a properly designed system; return temperatures generally exceed 150 Degrees F.
